What's Funk?

Funk is the rhythm controlled music, which connected in the late sixties, seventies and early eighties soul and late afro-american music styles.
However, the words, born in oral tradition the word "funk" has no real translation, cause the meaning of "funk" is variable. Original funk is the reflexion black mentality. "It's funky" in colloquial language moved in the sixties to a vogue word for pure pep. In the seventies funk was established as a musician style and created blossoms in funk-rock and funk-jazz.

Musical funk is a style of agressive urban dance music, escorted by heavy syncopied basslines and drumbeats and scratched guitarriffs will give a special accent.They are connectet in an rhytmical antagonism moving in a phrase named groove. Good old funk moves your feet and is the best way learning dancing. Funk is a mixture of soul, rhythm and blues and jazz, created with heavy bass-sound, percussion drums, scratching guitar and a chopped sound. Added by an expressive voice, nearly moving you out of your shoes...

Dancer and listeners have the special feeling of coolness, in this music lives hot-blooded style. Funk is hot, direct, urgent, combining an imense portion of exuberance an joy of life, as you say "the sunny side of life".

The disco-music of the late seventies was born of the rhythm and social basics of funk. In the eighties funk moved into main rhythm of black music.

Also funk was mixed with hardrock and punk. Funk got more important when rap was created in the middle of the eighties and when sampling in hip-hop grew more important. Funk was the connection to early artists and traditional afroamerican music. Today funk is the most important base of popular dance music.
